Canadian defenceman who made his NHL debut with the Detroit Red Wings in 2011. He previously spent three years playing college hockey at the University of Wisconsin, where he was a finalist for the Hobey Baker Award.
He grew up in Etobicoke, Ontario and began playing for the Wexford Raiders in the Ontario Provincial Junior A Hockey League in 2005. That year, he also represented Ontario at the World Under-17 Hockey Challenge.
As a member of the Red Wings, he faced off against his younger brother Reilly Smith in the first round of the 2014 playoffs when the Red Wings played the Boston Bruins.
His older brother, Rory Smith, is a lacrosse player who won back-to-back Mann Cups with the MSL Chiefs.
He has played alongside fellow defenceman Jonathan Ericsson in Detroit.
