She attended a variety of top-notch boarding schools and lost almost complete hearing in one of her ears.
Her birthday was celebrated by Girl Scouts nationwide as Founder's Day.
She had no children in her troubled marriage to William Mackay Low, which lasted from 1886 until 1905.
She carried out the vision of Lord Baden Powell, the founder of the Scouting Movement, who felt that girls should have their own scouting organization.
