All-Star pitcher who won both the AL MVP and AL Cy Young Award with the Detroit Tigers in 2011. He was named American League Rookie of the Year in 2006 and was selected to the AL All-Star game six times from 2007 to 2013. In 2017, he was traded to the Houston Astros, and he went on to help the Astros claim their first ever World Series title that year.
He could throw in the mid-80s by the time he reached high school.
He threw two no-hitters in his first 6 MLB seasons, one in 2007, the other in 2011. He won his second AL Cy Young Award with the Astros in 2019.
He is the son of Richard and Kathy Verlander. He began dating supermodel Kate Upton in the fall of 2011 and the couple got married in 2017. In November 2018, he and Kate welcomed a daughter named Genevieve.
He and Max Scherzer pitched together on the Tigers from 2010 to 2014.
