Ulysses S. Grant
US President
18th President of the United States who helped lead the Union forces to victory during the Civil War before he was elected into the presidency. He was also a soldier and statesman who served as Commanding General of the Army.
He refused to attend church services at West Point and was given demerits for his intransigence.
He was instrumental in passing the Fifteenth Amendment to the Constitution, which prevented the denial of voting rights based on race, color, or previous status as a slave.
He married Julia Dent in 1848, and the couple had four children together.
He and Mark Twain were lifelong friends.
