William Casey

CIA director from 1981 to 1987 who came under fire when the Iran-Contra arms-for-hostages deal came to public knowledge. He notably helped the mujahadeen resistance against Soviet forces in Afghanistan.
He became head of the Secret Intelligence Branch in Europe after starting at the OSS during World War II.
He had a stroke only hours before he was scheduled to testify before Congress about his knowledge of Iran-Contra.
His son-in-law is Owen Smith, the president of Friends of the Planting Fields Aboretum State Historic Site.
He was campaign manager of the successful campaign of Ronald Reagan.
